On Ending the Philosophy Department

Discouraging article about the increasing accountability that academic departments are feeling to cater to "business."

Bummer.

If any of ya'll who aren't comfortable with this order of things want to start a school where education is an end in itself, rather than a preparation for paper-pushing and greed-mongering, let me know. I'm on board. As long as you're not locating in Nebraska.

lincoln nebraska, specifically, is 20 times the town that west lafayette is. and at only 2.5X the population of this cement lafayette/west lafayette stripmall.

i'd be happier if my last 5 years were spent there.

Hm. Never been there. I always just pictured a treeless barren plane where there's a whipping snow six months of the year and an unrelenting sun for six months...

I think you've got more than five years to live, btw.

So "education is an end in itself" or "paper-pushing and greed-mongering" are our only options? Seems bleak.

Well, when I say "end in itself" I guess I mean toward other ends than business...

like, enlightenment, or wisdom, or civilization, or self-culture, or whatever.

So I probably shouldn't mention Lyotard, then, huh?

Depends on your motivation. ;)
